Madieu Williams: Vikings’ 2010 Community Man of the Year

Madieu Williams, Free Safety for the Minnesota Vikings, has been named Community Man of the Year for his work locally, in Cincinnati, in Maryland and in Sierra Leone.

Williams was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals out of the University of Maryland in 2004. He joined the Vikings in free agency in 2008 and continues as the starting Free Safety to this day. Williams was born in Freetown, Sierra Leone on October 18, 1981. He and his family moved to Maryland in 1990, where he continues to have strong ties.

The Madieu Williams Foundation was established in 2005 and promotes health, wellness, nutrition, education and fitness. The foundation is active in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Cincinnati, Maryland and Sierra Leone, providing not only funds for programs aimed at disadvantaged youth, but also has been involved in building schools in Sierra Leone to promote education as a means of escaping poverty.

In 2009, Williams donated $2 Million to the University of Maryland, in order to establish the Madieu Williams Center for Global Health Initiatives. He also ran a free football camp for the children of Prince George County.

In addition to his foundation work, Madieu Williams is very active in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. He’s involved in the North Community YMCA, Harvest Prep/Seed Academy, the United Way and he established “Dieu’s Crew” for disadvantaged youth where he provides season tickets for the kids so they can attend the home games.

In his introduction of Madieu to the media this week, Brad Madson, executive director of community relations for the Vikings, told those gathered that when Madieu Williams signed with the Vikings as a free agent in 2008, before he went to the airport to return to Maryland to arrange his move here, he wanted to go to the University of Minnesota Children’s Hospital to visit the kids.

Due to his extensive involvement in the community, Williams has been selected as the Vikings’ team representative for consideration as this year’s Walter Payton Man of the Year, the winner of which will be announced at this year’s Super Bowl. I think the Vikings selected an exemplary member of the team to represent Minnesota.

Williams addressed the media on Thursday. It’s worth watching to understand what motivates him. You can see the video here:
