Adrian Peterson: Viking for Life?

Adrian Peterson: the NFL's best RB

Big news out of Winter Park today. The Vikings have signed Adrian Peterson to a 7 year deal with $36 million in guaranteed money and the potential to earn $100 million. The new contract replaces the final year of his rookie contract and adds 6 additional years.

Adrian Peterson is the best running back in the NFL. Is his contract outlandish or is it reasonable? Earlier this season, Chris Johnson of the Tennessee Titans held out and eventually got a deal with $31 million in guaranteed money. Johnson is likely Peterson’s closest competitor in the right to be recognized as the best RB in the NFL. One has to wonder if Chris Johnson had not held out, would the Titans have forked over more money like the Vikings did for Adrian Peterson?

Over the last 2 years, Peterson has had his ups and downs. In 2009, his fumble in OT at Soldier Field cost the Vikings home-field advantage for the NFC Championship game. His fumbles IN the NFC Championship game weren’t doing us any favors. In 2010, Peterson fumbled once – a marked improvement over previous years.

Questions about his long-term future with the Vikings hit the radar back in 2009. Peterson said repeatedly in interviews that he wasn’t worried about his contract. He placed his faith in Zygi Wilf, and was rewarded for showing up instead of showboating like his fellow RB Chris Johnson.

Will this contract keep Adrian Peterson in Minnesota through the end of his career?
