Did Frazier Pull A Brewster?

Leslie Frazier, Head Coach of the Minnesota Vikings

As most people know, Leslie Frazier is now officially the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings. The Wilfs have left the power structure as it was and promoted Frazier after firing Brad Childress during the 2010 season.

Frazier said he was humbled by the opportunity. He also said that OTAs would be mandatory (Adrian Peterson – that’s for YOU! No celebrating yourself this year) and then… <cue ominous piano chords of doom> Frazier said it’s just a matter of time before the Vikings win a Super Bowl.

Two things come to mind. Yes, Leslie. It’s just a matter of time. We’ve been waiting 50 years for someone to seal the deal. We’re still waiting. Time? We’ve invested plenty of time… and we’re watching.

Tim Brewster promised a bowl appearance. Portent of doom?

The other thing that came to mind was the former head coach of the Minnesota Gophers. I’m an alumna of the U of MN, so I keep track of the goings-on there in a very not-too-interested fashion. When Brewster was fired mid-season, KFAN played some of his previous press conferences and talked a lot about his promises: chiefly getting the U of MN Gopher football team to a bowl game – and winning it.

Did Frazier just pull a Brewster? Can he really stand there and look at this 6-10 season and the incredible deterioration in the performance of team that went 12-4 last year and shout out “Super Bowl, homie!”? No, he can’t because he’s Leslie Frazier, not Randy Moss. So instead he said it was “just a matter of time.”

Leslie Frazier: I have my eye on you. I like his approach to team first and mandatory OTAs. I don’t think we should be eying a championship or stating that the team isn’t as big of a project as it seems – that it doesn’t need a complete rebuilding. I do like confidence from our head coach, but think it’s always better to under-promise and over-deliver.

Did the Wilfs make the best choice for the Vikings today?

Frazier & the Wilfs to Meet Next Week

Leslie Frazier, Interim Head Coach of the Minnesota Vikings, indicated that he will be meeting with the team’s owners next week after the conclusion of the season. The speculation is that the Wilfs will at least indicate their intent as it pertains to Frazier’s long-term role with the Vikings.

Leslie Frazier has stated emphatically that he would like to stay in Minnesota. He’s indicated that currently he’s focused on beating Detroit and that he’s not worried about whether or not he’ll be the head coach.

Previously I had predicted that if Leslie Frazier were able to show that he could motivate the team and end his 6 game audition at 3-3 at least, it was likely he’d be a lock for the role. A lot of things have happened since that prediction. Rumors of the Wilfs reaching out to Bill Parcells. More uncertainty around the CBA negotiations.

After the team’s performance in the Giants & Bears games, I lost some of my faith in Leslie. However, maybe a collapsing stadium roof, relocation of a game to Detroit and swirl around game location the following week was far more adversity than any coach could handle. I don’t know. I’m still watching though with a critical eye.

What do you think? Should Leslie Frazier be the Head Coach?
